Safe Rooms
Do you ever find yourself wishing there was a better spot to hunker down when severe weather strikes? When building your new custom home with us, consider adding a safe room to your custom design. Texas weather can sometimes pose a serious threat to buildings and their occupants if they’re not well-equipped. Safe rooms give you peace of mind that there’s a place to shelter in the event that adverse weather finds itself in your area.
The local building codes that houses are built in accordance with consider effects of minimum winds. These are winds that, according to building code requirements, your house must be able to withstand. However, a tornado or hurricane can often come with winds much greater than the winds local building code requirements are based on. Your house may be built “to code”, but that doesn’t always mean that it can withstand winds from those types of extreme events. If there’s a chance you’ll experience this type of weather where you live, especially if you live in Wind Zone III or IV, consider including a safe room shelter in your home design!
What exactly is a Safe Room?
A safe room is a small, windowless room built into the home structure to provide you, your family ,and your belongings protection from severe weather. It can also serve as a safe spot in the event of a home invasion.
How much protection will a Safe Room provide?
A safe room built according to FEMA approved plans can provide protection against winds of up to 250 mph or more and projectiles traveling at 100 mph or more – enough to protect the occupants from most extreme weather events.
Where should I build a Safe Room?
Many people choose the master closet for their safe room spot, but you can work with your home designer to choose a location that makes the most sense for you and your family!
**Please note that Dreams 2 Reality only builds safe rooms in new homes when they are designed in with the house and part of the new home construction. We do not accept projects to add them on to existing structures or as separate projects.
